I was given a roll of HP5 which I almost never use. During the move to Brighton I totally forgot about it and shot the entire film as if it were 160iso. Luckily the lab was able to pull the developing by a full stop and rescue the photos. The results are good but I still prefer Fuji Neopan 100.

There has been a slight gap in creative output photography wise but now that we're all settles down in our Brighton flat I'm ready to start shooting again. I will be beginning work on two projects.

The first will be titled something like 'Relationships of Form' and will be a collection of my various small series of images. I often make small triptychs and diptychs which I want to bring together into some sort of coherent project.

The most exciting project will allow me to play with both my love of analogue photography and outdated architecture. I have recently got my hands on a pack of Polaroid peel apart film which is 17 years out of date. I've taken a test shot and unbelievably I got some results! (below) I thought that Polaroid pretty much dried up after 7 years but apparently this stuff is okay. This project will be about rejoicing in the unpredictable nature of analogue photography as well as my love of outdated and forgotten design aesthetics. I will be using the remainder of the film entirely on the Hove Town Hall near my new flat. It is a fantastic piece of 'brutalist' architecture which I can't wait to explore.

I have a real taste for sequencing photos. It's almost my favorite aspect of photography in fact. These two don't go brilliantly but they still have a lot in common. I found the chair abandoned in a back street a year ago, it was soaking wet but I loved it so I took it home. I've had it for a year but it's time to move out and there is no room at the new place for it... I thought I'd better take a photo to remember it.

I've been reading up about a technique which recovers the negative from the FP-100 type film which my camera takes. I've given it a go and didn't even begin to realise how messy the process would be. It involves a LOT of Bleach and elbow grease. The results are varied and it's really easy to cock up but it's worth a go.

I picked up an Olympus XA for £5 at a charity shop and it's fantastic. I've never seen a rangefinder so small with such a sharp lens.

I've been completely absent from my blog ever since I graduated from my Photography Degree. To be honest I was almost entirely absent from photography for an entire year after my degree. I started regaining interest when my Dad bought me an old 35mm rangefinder. I took it out and shot a few rolls and this led me to start collecting old cameras everywhere! I began repairing and reconditioning any camera that took my fancy and within a few weeks I was fully in love with film photography again. I started just taking general snap shots although I started to focus on particular subjects in my photos. I have also began working in a Photo Lab which has seriously helped with much of my work.

My camera collection is now bigger than ever and I've fully immersed myself back into the world of traditional photography. Whether it's shooting, developing or printing I can't get enough of it. There is always a camera in my bag or pocket and in the past few months I have shot more film than at any mother point in my life.

I have updated my website with new content and have decided to use this blog as a platform for various works in progress and other photos that do not fit into any projects on my website. I will also post info about any new cameras, repairs or other photography related business.

This week I got up at 6 O'clock in the morning, the reason, my graduation ceremony. It was fantastic and gave me a great opportunity to see my course mates one more time before we all disburse into real life.

Well I've finished my degree! It's been three years that I will always remember very fondly. The last year of my studies has been by far the most rewarding experience of my life. I really poured a lot of effort and dedication into this year and came out with a dissertation which I am more than pleased with and a large collection of photographic work that I am very proud of. My hard work has paid off as I've achieved a 2:1 grade and will be graduating in September. At the moment I am spending my summer in my home town of Lowestoft although I will be returning to Plymouth in early September. My plan for the future is to spend the next few years working in order to fund my personal practise. Once I've paid off some of the student debts then the plan is to study a PGCE in Art and Design, this will qualify me to teach art subjects at sixth form level. Eventually I would like to complete my studies with an MA in photography. I will, of course, keep this blog up to date as I've managed to keep it going for 3 years so far. I am oblivious as to whether anyone actually reads it or not but I hope so.

The following section of text is a sort of conclusion from my research into global branding and consumerism. It accompanies a small series of images I have produced titled wasteland. My final images are ready for print and will be exhibited at my degree show, they will be posted soon.

We live in a world governed and driven by the consumerism industry. Our existence is dependent on the steady transferal of commodities, the desire to fulfill our dreams and needs accelerates this transferal. This would not be so much of a problem if the dreams to which we aspire were honest, honorable and realistic. Unfortunately the digital age has brought more than increased communication possibilities and radical ways of treating illnesses, alongside the positive developments there lies a host of unpleasant side effects. With the technology of the digital age we are being bombarded with expectations of wealth and unachievable lifestyles, our 'needs' have become unreasonably out of control and our desires are being controlled by companies and corporations who's only driving force and ambitions are economic gain. As we consume our way blindly through a dark forest of advertising and corporate branding we leave behind us a scorched trail of devastation and irretrievable resources. Where are we heading and why do we even want to get there? The answer is we don't know but as long as we have a hamburger in one hand and an iPod in the other we aren't going to bother asking. We march on in our trail of destruction fueled by a media fed frenzy of false desire.
The basic premise of a consumer driven society is that the supplier exists to provide the public sector with necessary goods and services. The nature of necessity and need is in theory decided by the public. Unfortunately this ideal is lost due to the profit seeking nature of global corporations. No longer are the corporations content in supplying the demand, in today's society they create the demand. Images of a perfect life and notions of the promised land come flying at us from every conceivable angle in day to day life, we live in the age of advertising. Our free will has been slowly but steadily eroded over years of adjustment to global brands and advertising. We no longer go for lunch, we go for Mc Donald's. We no longer grab a drink, we grab a Coke. Our minds are being conditioned to select the brand before the product.
Who can blame the corporations? Surely they are ran by ordinary people such as you and me? They have families to feed and bills to pay, but where does this greed for profit come from? When is enough finally enough, what is the ultimate goal of all this profit making? What is the real cost of these services that they kindly provide us with? The actions of these organisations are not human, they do not consider the implications of their actions or have the ability to empathise, the impact of global corporations on our Earth is monstrous. It is no secret that we are depleting the Earth's natural resources yet little change is made. The fact is that whilst most people are totally in favour of saving the environment they do not want it to effect their everyday lives. A time will come when our negligence will effect the lives of ordinary people such as ourselves. The public moan when we experience hose-pipe bans during the summer, how will they react when more of our 'rights' and amenities are restricted or removed? By then it will be too late to fight back. We are slowly digging ourselves a mass grave, which, when finally filled will mark an end to all our accomplishments and achievements. The earth will be left uninhabited with nothing to tell the tale of the human race's brief stay.

Through my photographs I would like to point out this somewhat apocalyptic prediction. Unfortunately it could be too late to change but I for one am not willing to go down without a fight. We live in an age of mass destruction and mass consumption, this is a fact far too easily forgotten, issues such as these need to be raised. The more we are confronted by the truth behind our excessive lifestyles the more seriously we will consider them. Something big needs to change before we loose the last islands of beauty Earth has to offer, they are not an equal trade for the latest brand driven trend or superficial fashion. We are no longer building for the future, we are building a wasteland.

I have chosen to explore the theme Island. When considering the theme of an island my initial thought are of isolation. Isolation can be considered in terms of peace or contentment but to me it stirs up thoughts of fear and entrapment. I will be considering the theme of island as a restrictive force or a controlling influence, an environment in which little is within your own control. I will be conducting my photographic exploration within artificial aquariums starting with the Plymouth National Maritime Aquarium.

The fish contained within the aquarium are entirely removed from there natural environment. Despite best efforts to re-create a realistic natural world inside the tanks the fact that they are isolated and deprived from following many basic instincts is difficult to ignore. As you watch them from the corridors and walkways they become reminiscent of prisoners. Many of the fish repeat the same actions over and over as though they are video on loop. Their pacing and repetitive movements become similar to those of a patient contained in a maximum security mental asylum. They are condemned to a life sentence with the Perspex walls. Thought most aquariums are charity based and raise important awareness and money for honourable related causes it still seems a shame that people are only willing to help when something is placed directly in front of them. The information boards that speak of the appalling treatment of the animals and there environment go unnoticed and what is intended as a learning experience is easily treated as a spectacle. Through my photos I wish open peoples eyes to the fact that what they are presented with is an effort to make a difference to the fragile environment that is our world and eco-system. The fish silently suffer the punishment for the wrongs created and perpetrated by human kind. They quietly observe us through a wall of glass, alone, misplaced and in total isolation.

For some, answering this question will enable us to better understand the nature of humans and the proper scope of our moral obligations. Some argue that there is an answer that can distinguish humans from the rest of the natural world. Ultimate Fighting

Me and my friend were asked to cover the ultimate fighting contest by a friend of ours who is involved in the organisation. Although it's not really my thing i decided to give it a go anyway and it went extremely well. The fighting was impressive and made a fantastic subject.

I've added a few new bits of kit to my collection in the past week. The first and by far most exciting is my new medium format Bronica ETRSi. I've been borrowing one from college all year so it's great to finally have my own and it means i can keep shooting over summer.

I've also got a new auto release remote control for my digital SLR. It's just for a laugh really but it'll make it easier for photo's that involve me. It's very fun to play with.

My images are provocative reminders of basic human emotions, in certain situations regular thought can accelerate beyond logical boundaries. The urge to follow certain social conventions brings us back down to earth and gives us a comfort zone that prevents these emotions from reaching climax.

The second you enter a public convenience you evaluate your surroundings, assess the environment and decide on your next move all hinged on your initial surveillance. The thoughts that race through your mind in these awkward situations can provoke feelings of fear, anxiety and loathing. I am investigating these emotions through my photography using the subject to impart the underlying subtext.

I've been using my pictures of tattooing and tattoo related equipment as i have been quite busy with my tattooing. I took a trip to St Ives on Saturday so that i could take some picture for my landscape project. It was really beautiful and i really enjoyed myself. Me and Richard tried to visit Tate St Ives but unfortunately thy were re-hanging all the work so we missed out.

When a planned trip to St Ives went up the spout thanks to a useless bus driver i took the equipment that i had already packed and rode the bike to Stithians reservoir. I took my digi SLR, medium format and my 35mm SLR loaded with slide film which i planned to cross process. These are a couple of pictures from my digi SLR.

Book Cover Project

As part of our illustration lessons we have been set the task to make a selection of book jackets for a book of our choice. I have chosen 'The Fog' by James Herbert. Its a horror story about a poisonous fog which drives people insane. This is one of my designs. I used Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the images (of which there are roughly 6) then overlaid graphics, text and the bar code using Adobe Illustrator.

"Not Clever" Gig Flyer

I was asked to make some gig flyers for my mates band. The band are a rock covers group so i wanted the posters to have a grungy appearance. The finished posters took roughly three hours using Photoshop and Illustrator. The Photos are from a shoot i did at one of their gigs.

It was recently my 20th birthday and my relatives all sent me money instead of presents, I've decided to put all the money towards photography equipment. The first thing I've bought is an old Lomo twin lens reflex. It shoots on medium format film and i took it out for the first time yesterday. It works great and ill have the pics up in no time.

Advertising Shots in the Studio

Today i booked the studio to shoot the images for my advertising project. I had to book it a week in advance to ensure the smoke alarms were isolated. It turned out that there arn't actually any smoke alarms in the studio...

This is the first shot i've editted from the session which we finished 50 mins ago. Its actually a composit of two photographs.

Fletch, Phil, Kerry and Alina kindly modelled for me (even if it was just so i could give them all free cigerettes.) They all smoked their own weight in fags which was highly entertaining... for me...

Provisional Advertising Shots

We've been given an advertising project and I've decided to do an anti-smoking campaign as its quite prevalent in advertising culture at the moment. I've taken a few shots using low natural light to bring out the glowing tip of the cigarette. Of course the only problem being that every time i take shots for the project i am actually defeating the object of my advertising campaign... Not smoking...

This is a stencil from my Illustration project, we had to make a couple of illustrations which represented our individual style and personality. I wanted to use stencilling in my finished pieces but after cutting my stencil I realised that I had no spray paints so the stencil went unused. I will try and use it at some point, possibly to decorate the covers of my sketchbooks for future projects.

A couple of weeks ago I took some shots of my friends Tom and Ben at Yarmouth skate park, The results were pretty pleasing although it did lead to my camera being broken by Tom skateboard on more than one occasion. Despite the fear of concussion it was lots of fun and I really want to find some more action photography subjects to shoot.

I took a series of live gig shots for my friends band at Christmas. They are called "Not Clever" and shooting them was challenging as it was the first time I had tried to do live gig work. The main difficulty was lighting as I only had my directional flash unit.

This was taken as a simple example of a Low Key studio shot. It was fairly heavily edited in Photoshop as the floor was clearly visible in the original shot.

These are some shots from my fashion photography project, I wanted them to resemble the sort of modern perfume adverts which are often seen on large bill boards. I shot them in my own house using improvised studio lighting i.e. floor lamps and bedside lamps.
